How to Play Blackjack: Rules, a Round Step by Step, and the House Edge

How to play blackjack: playing cards fanned on green felt, a card game against a dealer
Playing cards fanned on green felt, to illustrate how to play blackjack: a card game of chance against a dealer with fixed rules.

In short

How to play blackjack comes down to one aim: beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. You get two cards, choose whether to take more, and the dealer then plays by fixed rules. Chance decides every card, and the casino keeps a built-in edge.

  • One opponent. You play against the dealer.
  • Four main choices. Hit, stand, double down or split.
  • A built-in cost. Knowing the rules never removes the casino’s edge.

How to play blackjack: the goal and the card values

Learning how to play blackjack starts with the real goal. It is not “get as close to 21 as you can”. The aim is to beat the dealer, which means you must not bust (go over 21) and must also finish above the dealer or see the dealer bust (Wizard of Odds, checked 6 October 2026).

A hand is worth the total of its cards. One to eight standard decks may be used, depending on the table.

An ace dealt together with any 10-point card, as your first two cards, makes a “blackjack”, also known as a “natural”. It ranks above every other hand that totals 21.

How does blackjack work in one round?

To see how to play blackjack in practice, follow one round from bet to payout. The order below is the common one (Wizard of Odds and Wikipedia, checked 6 October 2026).

  1. Each player places a bet.
  2. The dealer gives two cards to every player and two to the dealer. The dealer shows one card and keeps the other hidden; that hidden card is the “hole card”.
  3. When the dealer’s visible card is an ace, players may be offered a separate side bet named insurance. It pays 2 to 1 if the hole card is worth 10, and it can be up to half of your first bet.
  4. If the dealer shows a ten-point card or an ace, the dealer checks the hole card for a blackjack. If there is one, the round ends at once.
  5. Otherwise play starts with the player on the dealer’s left and moves clockwise. Each player makes decisions until they stand or bust.
  6. The dealer turns over the hole card and draws cards by fixed rules.
  7. Then every player hand is measured against the dealer’s total. A higher total wins, a lower total loses, and a tie, called a “push”, returns the bet.

Wikipedia notes that insurance loses money over the long run, because the dealer holds a blackjack less than a third of the time.

How to play blackjack: what can you do on your turn?

On your first two cards you can usually choose from the options below. After a third card, only hit and stand remain.

ChoiceWhat happens
HitYou take one more card. Going over 21 is a bust and the bet is lost at once.
StandYou keep your cards and end your turn.
Double downYou put down an extra bet matching your first, then receive one card only.
SplitWith a pair, you make two hands, each with its own bet. Each of the two hands is then dealt its own next card.
SurrenderAt tables that allow it, you give up half your bet and end the hand.

Wizard of Odds adds that at face-up tables you must use hand signals, because words alone are not enough. Tapping the table means hit, and a flat wave of the hand means stand.

What does the dealer do, and what does a blackjack pay?

The dealer has no choices. The dealer draws on 16 or less and stops at 17 or more (Wizard of Odds and Wikipedia, checked 6 October 2026). On a “soft 17”, a hand with an ace counted as 11, some tables make the dealer stand and others make the dealer hit.

The blackjack rules on payouts matter more than most players expect. Winning bets are paid at even money, so NPR 100 wins NPR 100. A winning blackjack usually pays 3 to 2, which is NPR 150 on NPR 100, but some tables pay 6 to 5 and give only NPR 120.

Wizard of Odds says a 3 to 2 table pays 30% more on every winning blackjack than a 6 to 5 table. It also tells players to check the table’s sign or ask before sitting down.

A worked example, as an illustration

These numbers are invented to show the usual blackjack rules at work. They are not real play and do not suggest what to do.

  1. A player bets NPR 100 and receives an 8 and a 7, a total of 15. The dealer shows a 9.
  2. The player chooses to hit and receives a 5. The total is now 20, and the player stands.
  3. The dealer turns over a 6, which makes 15. That is 16 or less, so the dealer must draw.
  4. The dealer draws an 8 and reaches 23. The dealer busts, and the player is paid NPR 100, and the stake comes back.

Had the dealer finished on 20, the hand would be a push and the NPR 100 would simply come back.

How big is the house edge, and where does blackjack basic strategy fit in?

When you learn how to play blackjack, you should also learn what it costs. The house edge is the share of each bet the casino keeps on average across a very large number of bets. It is a long-run average, not a forecast for one sitting.

Wikipedia explains that every game has a “blackjack basic strategy”, a fixed choice for each hand against each dealer card. Used correctly, it lowers the long-run house edge.

Wizard of Odds has a calculator for the edge under chosen rules. It lowers the cost but does not remove it.

Blackjack pays 6 to 51.82%The same rules, only the payout changed
Atlantic City-style rules0.43%A fixed chart of correct plays, dealer stands on soft 17

The last two rows show what two popular hunches cost according to Wizard of Odds. They are not instructions.

At 0.46%, NPR 10,000 staked across many bets costs about NPR 46 on average. At 1.82% the same stake costs about NPR 182.

No stake pattern changes these averages. Our guide on whether roulette systems work shows why with a worked example.

What does table etiquette look like?

Anyone learning how to play blackjack for a live table also needs the manners. Wizard of Odds lists the main ones (checked 6 October 2026).

  • Signals. Learn the hand signals before you sit down, so the game is not held up.
  • Other players. Do not criticise how someone else plays their hand.
  • The dealer. Leave the dealer out of your decisions. Dealers are wary of being blamed for a result.
  • Tips. Tipping is a custom that varies by place, and it is never a rule of the game.

What can knowing the rules not change?

Knowing how to play blackjack lets you follow a table and understand each decision. It does not change the odds. Each card is random, and a built-in edge applies to every hand, even when a fixed chart of correct plays is used.

Wikipedia adds that card counting is legal, but a casino may tell a counter to stop playing blackjack or ban them from the property. This guide does not teach counting, and nothing here is a method of beating the game.

Nepal law matters too. Rising Nepal reported on 31 March 2026 that officials stated betting is illegal under the Criminal Code 2017 and the Advertisement Regulation Act. This is general information, not legal advice; see our guide to betting law in Nepal.

Begin with the target: finish above the dealer while staying at 21 or under. Then learn the card values and the four main choices.
