Is eSewa Safe? What eSewa Says, What You Control, and Common Scams
A checklist built from eSewa's own security and scam pages, with the gaps we could not verify and what to do if something goes wrong.

In short
The honest answer to “Is eSewa safe?” is that eSewa publishes real protections, but no wallet removes all risk. It describes an MPIN, one-time codes (OTP), identity checks (KYC) and device verification, and it warns about phishing and SIM-swap fraud. Most losses begin with a person being tricked, so your habits matter.
- What eSewa does: publishes security rules and scam warnings, labelled below with the date on each page.
- What you do: keep your MPIN and OTP private, and never trust a caller who says they are eSewa.
- If it goes wrong: call eSewa’s helpline the same day, then report to the police.
Everything here comes from eSewa’s own pages and public bodies, read on 6 October 2026. Several pages are old, and a wallet can change its rules, so confirm in the app.

Is eSewa safe? What eSewa says it does
Nobody outside eSewa can prove a wallet is safe, and this page does not try. It reads what eSewa publishes about eSewa security and marks each point as eSewa’s own statement.
eSewa’s security page, dated 23 January 2019, says the service uses a 128-bit SSL certificate to protect data on its way across the internet. It adds that transfers from partner banks use a secured VPN link. The page is old, so read it as a statement of intent, not a current audit.
The same page tells users to guard the MPIN (the PIN that opens the mobile app), choose a strong password, keep the phone locked and install the app only from eSewa’s official website. It says eSewa never emails or calls to ask for your username or password.
A page dated 28 August 2023 describes device binding. When you sign in on a new phone you must repeat a verification step, and eSewa says the step exists to confirm that it is really you on the other handset.
What do you control? A short checklist
People who ask “Is eSewa safe?” often forget that half the answer sits in their own pocket. The table lists the habits eSewa itself asks for.
| Habit | What eSewa states | Page and date |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the MPIN private | Do not tell it to anyone, and change it from time to time | Security, 23 Jan 2019 |
| Never share an OTP | Not with friends, relatives or agents, and eSewa never asks for it | OTP guide, 5 Sep 2021 |
| Complete KYC | Needed for wallet-to-wallet sends, and for the eScrow service | Limits and eScrow pages, checked 5 Oct 2026 |
| Lock the phone | Do not leave it unattended, and turn on its lock | Security, 23 Jan 2019 |
| Watch your statements | Check eSewa and bank records, and register an email for alerts | SIM-swap alert, 30 Jun 2024 |
| Open the real site | Type esewa.com.np yourself, and use the official app | Security, 23 Jan 2019 |
Sources: the eSewa pages named in the table. Checked 6 October 2026, apart from the KYC rows first checked 5 October 2026.
Notice what the list leaves out. Nothing on it depends on trusting a caller, which is the pattern behind most scams below.

Which eSewa scam patterns does eSewa warn about?
The wallet’s own blog names several tricks. An eSewa scam usually asks you to hand over a secret or send money first, so each row ends with the step eSewa advises.
| Pattern | How it shows up | What eSewa advises | Page and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fake “eSewa” call | An unrequested call about a prize, a KYC drive, cashback or a special merchant title, asking for ID details | Hang up, report the number to the helpline, never give details | Phishing alert, 27 Jun 2024 |
| OTP request | Someone posing as a bank or wallet asks for a code, password or PIN | Banks and wallets never ask for these. Use two-factor sign-in | Scams guide, 19 Feb 2025 |
| SIM swap | A fraudster gets a new SIM for your number, so your codes reach them | Call your mobile operator if the phone loses service, and check statements | SIM-swap alert, 30 Jun 2024 |
| Fake online shop | A social page takes an advance payment and never delivers | Use eScrow when paying an unknown seller | Scams guide, 19 Feb 2025 |
| Prize, job, rent or investment offer | A fee is demanded first, often over Telegram or WhatsApp | Do not pay upfront, and check the offer first | Scams guide, 19 Feb 2025 |
Two details are worth keeping. eSewa warns that fraudsters can disguise their real phone numbers, so a caller ID that looks right proves nothing. It also says it never tells anyone to do a SIM swap by sending an SMS.
eScrow holds a payment so that it sits neither in the sender’s account nor the receiver’s until the goods arrive. eSewa describes it as a service for KYC-verified users.
Fake screenshots, QR codes and support numbers
So “Is eSewa safe?” also depends on what happens outside the app. The eSewa pages we read do not name fake payment screenshots, QR-code tricks or fake support numbers (checked 6 October 2026). What follows is our own advice, not an eSewa statement.
- Selling something: confirm the money in your own eSewa history. A screenshot from the buyer is only a picture.
- Scanning a code or typing a number: read the receiver’s name and the amount on the confirmation screen before you approve. Our eSewa vs Khalti guide shows how one scanned code can reach the wrong app.
- Needing help: take contact details only from eSewa’s own pages or the app. A number in a social comment or a search advert can belong to a scammer.
- Feeling rushed: pressure is the signal. Stop, close the call and check through the app.

What if you are caught out by an eSewa fraud?
When “Is eSewa safe?” becomes “it happened to me”, move the same day. Waiting makes recovery harder, and the reporting windows are short.
- Stop sharing. Hang up, and change your MPIN if you gave it out.
- Contact eSewa. eSewa’s phishing and SIM-swap pages give the helpline 1660-01-02121 and the email csd@esewa.com.np.
- Put it in writing. For unauthorised activity, eSewa’s fraud page asks for an email within 45 calendar days of the transaction. That page is dated 16 January 2019.
- Tell the police. Nepal Police Cyber Bureau has an online complaint page for cybercrime, and an email address, cyberbureau@nepalpolice.gov.np.
- Escalate if you are unhappy. Nepal Rastra Bank runs a public complaint portal, gunaso.nrb.org.np.
The 20-day and 30-day steps, and the limits of what eSewa will take up, are set out in our eSewa vs Khalti guide. Keep screenshots of transaction IDs, times and names. Be wary of anyone who offers to recover your money for a fee.
What we could not verify
An honest answer to “Is eSewa safe?” has gaps, and these are ours.
- No independent audit: we found no published audit or inspection result for eSewa, and we did not check Nepal Rastra Bank’s licence list in this run.
- No loss figures: we found no reliable public numbers on how often eSewa users are defrauded, so we quote none.
- Old pages: the security and fraud pages date from 2019, the OTP guide from 2021. The phishing and SIM-swap alerts are from 2024.
- Not tested: we did not open the app or an account, so we cannot confirm which settings it offers today.
- Helpline: the number appears on two 2024 pages. Check it in the app before you call.
Where do wallets and betting fit?
“Is eSewa safe?” is a wallet question, and a betting site is a separate matter. Betting is reported to be illegal in Nepal: officials, as quoted by Rising Nepal on 31 March 2026, point to the Criminal Code 2017 and the Advertisement Regulation Act. eSewa’s fraud page says it will not take up issues tied to activity the government treats as illegal, so a betting-linked transfer that goes wrong may get no help.

FAQ
Is eSewa safe for a new user?
It can be, if you follow the basics. Complete KYC, keep the MPIN and OTP private, and ignore unrequested calls. eSewa publishes these rules, but it cannot stop you giving away a code.
Is eSewa safe to use for online shopping?
Be careful with sellers you do not know. eSewa’s own guide advises eScrow for unknown sellers and warns that fake shops take advance payments and disappear.
Is eSewa safe if I lose my phone?
The pages we read do not describe a lost-phone process. Call the helpline, 1660-01-02121, as soon as you can, and ask your operator about the SIM. A locked phone and a private MPIN also help.
Does eSewa ever ask for my OTP?
No. eSewa says it never asks for your OTP on any occasion, not even to check KYC or announce a prize.
How do I report eSewa fraud?
Call 1660-01-02121 or email csd@esewa.com.np, then file a cybercrime complaint with the police. For the time windows, see our wallet comparison.
